Peak season staffing doesn’t fail in November. It fails in October, when nobody has started screening yet.
Black Friday is 27 November 2026, and Cyber Monday lands three days later. You have to source, screen, clear and train everyone you need on that floor before then.

Peak season staffing goes wrong the same way every year. Volume forecasts land in September, headcount clears approval in late October, and somebody starts recruiting in the first week of November — roughly three weeks before the busiest day of the year.
Then the maths catches up. Screening a driver properly isn’t a phone call; it’s a ten-part background investigation — DMV record, DOT physical, drug screen, criminal, references, road test. Most of that wait isn’t your agency being slow. It’s third parties returning paperwork on their own schedule.
Start that in November and you are not staffing peak season. You are staffing January.
The other half of the problem
The instinct when volume spikes is to hire permanent heads and sort it out later. It works right up until the second week of January, when the volume is gone and the headcount isn’t.
Now you’re carrying people you can’t keep busy, having the conversation nobody wants to have, and paying unemployment on the way out. The December problem solved itself into a Q1 problem.
The question isn’t how many people you need in November. It’s how many you still need in February — and how you cover the difference without putting them on your payroll to find out.

What peak season staffing actually takes
Bring people on without bringing them onto your payroll. Elite HR carries the employment relationship during placement — payroll, insurance and employee documentation — so the people on your floor in December are our employees until you decide otherwise.
That is what peak season staffing should look like. Many placements start as a Test Drive: the worker works, we cover payroll and insurance through the trial, and both sides find out whether it fits. The ones who are good, you keep. The ones who aren’t, you were never committed to. And you are under no obligation to convert anyone if you do not wish to.
For drivers, DQ files come with them before they leave your terminal — federal rules require a driver qualification file for every CMV driver — and we complete all ten checks before referring anyone to you. If you want to see what that screening costs when you run it yourself, we built a calculator for it.
